Bigmate began in Mackay, Queensland, in 1996. For the past decade, we have applied AI and computer vision to how heavy industry protects its people and equipment. Today our systems are in production in ten countries.

Bigmate was founded in Mackay, in regional Queensland, in 1996.
2016 to 2021
Teaching machines to see
- 2016Our first AI and computer vision team, formed before industrial computer vision was mainstream.
- 2018WARNY, designed and deployed in 90 days. It spots people breaching the zone around a moving forklift, on the CCTV a site already has.
- 2019Depth and distance models, integration with the machinery itself, and sites across Australian trade, warehousing and logistics.
- 2020THERMY, for safer site access during COVID: temperature screening at the door, with alerts and door-control integration.

From warning to intervening
- 2022A world first: proximity detection integrated with a working dragline’s drives, first deployed at Coronado’s Curragh mine. The same year, we expanded into the Americas and Europe.
- 2023PAS moved from field validation into rollout across the Bowen Basin.
- 2024WARNY launched across US warehouses and manufacturing sites.
- 2024The Pirtek Safety Initiative Award at the 2024 Queensland Mining Awards, for PAS.
